Are you really… scared of gifts?- False Friends in English and German

False Friends: GIFT

This is my favorite false friend between English and German.

In German, GIFT is bad. In fact, it can kill you! But in English, GIFTS are amazing. It's when someone gives you something, just because they want to be nice!

gift = das Geschenk
poison = das Gift

Can you imagine Jan going to the US and hearing someone say "I'd like to give you a gift" with a big smile on their face? Hopefully Jan has read this page, so he knows that he should accept the gift instead of running away.

Or John from the US visiting Germany and accepting "ein Gift" from someone without realizing that it's actually going to kill him.

I think I'd rather be Jan in this situation!
